Service at Saint Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv
On Friday, March 27, Metropolitan Epifaniy, the head of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU), will lead a divine service at the Saint Sophia Cathedral. According to OCU spokesman Ivan Sydor, a special prayer service with the reading of an Akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos before the 'Oranta' icon will be held at the cathedral at 12:00. This service at a UNESCO World Heritage site underscores the OCU's connection to Ukraine's historic Christian roots.
Recent Activities of the OCU
Earlier this month, on March 8, Metropolitan Epifaniy celebrated a solemn liturgy in the Refectory Church of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. The Near Caves of this Lavra, which had been closed for restoration and inspections since August 2023, officially reopened to visitors on March 8, 2026.
In a significant recent development, the Saint Volodymyr's Cathedral in Kyiv was transferred to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine on March 23. For over six decades, this cathedral was under the ministry of Patriarch Filaret of Kyiv and All Rus-Ukraine. On the same day, Metropolitan Epifaniy conducted a memorial service at the grave of the recently deceased Patriarch Filaret. He was joined in prayer by Metropolitan Fedir of Poltava and Kremenchuk, the cathedral's clergy, invited clergy, and Patriarch Filaret's relatives.
These events highlight the Orthodox Church of Ukraine's active role in reclaiming its traditions and strengthening its position in the nation's religious life. Holding services at landmark sites like Saint Sophia Cathedral emphasizes the importance of historical and cultural heritage for modern Ukrainians. The transfer of Saint Volodymyr's Cathedral to the OCU further reflects the ongoing shifts in Ukraine's religious landscape, which continue to evolve amid contemporary challenges and societal transformations.
As the Orthodox Church of Ukraine continues to strengthen its presence, the recent transfer of St. Volodymyr's Cathedral to the OCU marks a significant milestone. This move not only reflects the church's evolving role within the nation but also emphasizes its commitment to preserving Ukraine's rich religious heritage, which will be further highlighted during the upcoming service at Saint Sophia Cathedral.
