Ukraine's Military Call-Up: Eligibility for Men Aged 55 and Over

В Україні військовий призов: хто з чоловіків віком старше 55 років може бути мобілізований

The State of Mobilization in Ukraine

Ukraine remains under martial law and a general mobilization, which now includes men aged 50 to 60. Since January 1, 2023, new rules have been in effect for drafting men who have passed the age of 55. The maximum age for compulsory military service is set at 60. Men in this age bracket can be mobilized on general grounds if they possess a relevant specialty and are not eligible for exemption. This policy reflects the prolonged nature of the conflict and the need to utilize all available human resources.

Specifics of the Mobilization Process

It is important to note that men over 50 are primarily not assigned to assault units, meaning their role in direct combat operations may be less active. Exemptions from the draft are possible due to serious health issues or if an individual is deemed essential at a critical enterprise. If a man is deemed fit for service, holds no deferment or reservation, and possesses a needed specialty, he can be mobilized even at age 59. These adjustments to mobilization rules highlight the military's need to adapt its resources to the demands of a protracted war.

The changes in mobilization conditions for men aged 50 to 60 demonstrate the Ukrainian government's aim to utilize all available resources as effectively as possible. Adapting the legislation allows for the inclusion of specialists who can contribute significantly to national defense, regardless of their age. This shift underscores the conflict's duration and the necessity of drawing on broader segments of the population to meet military requirements.
