Explore the Mysterious Ice Caves Underground
Mojang has revealed plans for a new subterranean ice cave biome coming to Minecraft in a winter update scheduled for late December 2026. These frozen caves will be found beneath snowy biomes and will feature glowing ice crystals for players to discover. Adding to the challenge, a new hostile mob called the Frozen Zombie will appear in these dark caverns. This enemy spawns when a regular zombie lingers too long in soft snow and can hurl icy snowballs that knock players back and cause freezing effects, offering fresh combat dynamics.
The Sift: Minecraft's New Dimension Arriving in 2027
Beyond the icy depths, Mojang has also announced The Sift, a brand-new fourth dimension set to debut in 2027. This is Minecraft’s first additional dimension since the 2011 introduction of The End and its iconic Ender Dragon. Designed as a peaceful counterpart to the Overworld, The Sift will be a vibrant environment filled with red and orange stone, lush green plants, sculk blocks, and lakes of liquid ichor.

The Sift will first appear in Minecraft Dungeons 2 on September 29, 2026, before arriving in the main Minecraft game the following year.
Mojang’s team aimed to craft a world distinctly different from the Nether and The End, which are known for their perilous atmospheres. Studio representative Mens Olson explained:
“The new dimension is envisioned as an alternative to the Overworld where players can peacefully coexist amidst vibrant nature.”
