Moldovan Authorities Warn of Scam Targeting Ukrainian Refugees Seeking Protection

Влада Молдови попереджає про шахрайство, яке намагається обманути українських біженців, що шукають прихисток.

Alert Issued Over Fraudulent Website

Moldova's General Inspectorate for Migration has issued a public warning concerning a fraudulent website, protectietemporara.md, which is attempting to deceive Ukrainian refugees by offering paid services to extend their temporary protection. The agency emphasizes that the official procedure for extending this protection is entirely free of charge and must be conducted exclusively through the official government platform at igm.gov.md. The Inspectorate has stated unequivocally that the protectietemporara.md site is in no way affiliated with Moldovan state authorities and contains fraudulent content and services.

Statistics on Ukrainian Refugees in the EU

As of the end of 2025, there were 4.35 million Ukrainians under temporary protection residing in European Union countries. In October 2025 alone, EU nations issued 74,175 new decisions granting temporary protection, marking the second-highest monthly figure for that year. Germany has taken in the largest number of Ukrainian refugees, hosting over 1.2 million individuals, which accounts for nearly 28.6% of the total within the EU.

The Moldovan General Inspectorate for Migration has reported the scam site to the relevant authorities and initiated steps to have it investigated and blocked.

The website protectietemporara.md is not managed by the General Inspectorate for Migration and does not belong to the state authorities of Moldova. The content and services offered are fraudulent,
the Inspectorate's statement reads. Refugees are advised to seek reliable information only from official sources.
If you were asked to pay money or if you used suspicious platforms, report it immediately to the police,
the Inspectorate urged.

The official platform for extending temporary protection is accessible at igm.gov.md under the 'Temporary Protection' section, within the 'Extend Temporary Protection' subsection.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by displaced populations seeking safety and legal status. Scammers often exploit the vulnerability of individuals navigating complex bureaucratic processes in unfamiliar countries. Official bodies continue to stress the critical importance of vigilance and relying solely on verified government channels to avoid financial loss and further complications when seeking assistance.
