Moldova Extends Temporary Protection Status for Ukrainians
The Moldovan government has decided to extend the temporary protection status for Ukrainian nationals until March 1, 2027. This move provides stability and predictability for displaced persons living and working in Moldova. The new regulations will introduce a streamlined renewal mechanism via an online application, which will become available in 2026.
It is important to note that throughout 2024 and 2025, documents for individuals with temporary protection status were renewed automatically. However, a significant number of people have since left Moldova's territory. Beneficiaries wishing to extend their status must submit an online application between February 1 and April 30, 2026. Failure to apply within this window will result in the termination of the temporary protection status, though individuals will retain the right to submit a new application. This policy reflects Moldova's ongoing commitment to supporting refugees from the war in Ukraine.
Requirements for Minors
For minors who turned 14 years old between March 1, 2023, and January 1, 2026, a new requirement mandates an in-person visit to the General Inspectorate for Migration to provide fingerprints. Additionally, the validity of the protection extension can be verified using a QR code printed on the back of the identity document.
The extension of temporary protection is a crucial step for Ukrainians who have found refuge in Moldova, as it secures their legal status and right to work in the country. The introduction of the electronic application system is expected to simplify the process for beneficiaries, potentially enhancing their integration into Moldovan society. This decision underscores Moldova's continued solidarity with Ukraine amid the ongoing regional conflict.
