Targeted Assistance Program for Early-Career Physicians
The Ukrainian government has expanded its targeted financial aid initiative for young doctors, now offering a one-time payment of 200,000 hryvnias upon employment. This update was announced by Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko. The program is designed for medical graduates who have completed their internships at state-run higher education institutions.
Eligibility Requirements for the Payment
To qualify for the 200,000 hryvnia grant, young doctors must commit to working for at least three years in state- or municipally-owned healthcare facilities located in communities with a critical shortage of medical staff. Previously, the program was limited to graduates taking positions in active combat zones or rural areas. Now, it has been broadened to include those employed in healthcare institutions situated in areas where hostilities are possible.
Notably, the program excludes Kyiv Oblast and certain cities of regional significance, specifically:
- Zaporizhzhia
- Mykolaiv
- Odesa
- Kharkiv
- Chernihiv
Yuliia Svyrydenko: 'A one-time payment is available to medical graduates who have completed their internship at state higher education institutions and have secured employment for at least three years in state- or municipally-owned healthcare facilities in communities with a critical need for medical professionals.'
This expansion of the targeted assistance program represents a significant step toward addressing Ukraine’s healthcare staffing challenges, particularly amid the ongoing war and regional doctor shortages. By incentivizing more medical graduates to serve in high-need communities, the updated terms aim to improve access to healthcare services for the population. For context, Ukraine has faced persistent difficulties in recruiting medical personnel to conflict-affected areas, and this initiative is part of broader efforts to bolster the healthcare system during the war.
