Weather Forecast for Ukraine on February 9
The Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center warns of a cold and dry day on February 9, with widespread ice glazing on roads posing a significant hazard. While most western, southern, and eastern regions may see light snow, the rest of the country is expected to remain precipitation-free. This forecast comes as Ukraine continues to manage its energy infrastructure under winter strain.
According to the forecast, northerly winds of 5-10 m/s will prevail. Overnight, air temperatures will plummet to between -13°C and -18°C (8.6°F to -0.4°F), while daytime highs will range from -12°C to -7°C (10.4°F to 19.4°F). In the Precarpathian region, the south, and the southeast, nighttime lows will be -14°C to -9°C (6.8°F to 15.8°F), warming to -8°C to -3°C (17.6°F to 26.6°F) during the day. Zakarpattia will be milder, with nighttime temperatures around 0°C (32°F) and daytime highs of 1°C to 6°C (33.8°F to 42.8°F).
Outlook for the Kyiv Region and Capital
Cloudy spells with clear intervals are forecast for the Kyiv region and the capital, with no precipitation but dangerous ice on roads. Northerly winds of 5-10 m/s are expected in the region. Temperatures in Kyiv Oblast will drop to -18°C to -13°C (-0.4°F to 8.6°F) overnight and reach highs of -12°C to -7°C (10.4°F to 19.4°F) in the day. In the city of Kyiv itself, residents can expect lows of -16°C to -14°C (3.2°F to 6.8°F) and daytime highs of -10°C to -8°C (14°F to 17.6°F).
Given the forecast, Ukrainians are urged to exercise extreme caution on roads due to ice, particularly in western and southern areas. The severe cold may also place additional pressure on the national power grid, requiring extra measures to ensure residential heating, especially in northern regions anticipating the lowest temperatures. This situation necessitates proactive planning by local authorities and emergency services to mitigate the impacts of the freeze.
