Ukraine's Deep Freeze to Briefly Ease

Meteorologists have announced when a new wave of cold weather is expected. Natalia Didenko reported that a temporary easing of the severe frost is forecast for the latter half of this week. However, a return to freezing conditions is predicted for January 20th.

Weather Forecast

On the night of January 20th, temperatures in northern and western Ukraine will range from -12 to -18 degrees Celsius, with some areas potentially dropping to -20°C. Daytime highs that day will reach only -6 to -11°C. It is worth noting that the Zhytomyr and Kyiv regions have already experienced the coldest night of the past week, with temperatures plunging to -23°C.

This intense cold spell is being driven by a powerful continental anticyclone situated over Eurasia.

“The easing of the frost will be accompanied by the arrival of precipitation and stronger winds,” said Natalia Didenko.

Vitaliy Pistryak emphasized that the lowest temperatures may not yet have been reached, and the coming night could be even harsher. He also commented on his colleague's forecast regarding the nature of this weather phenomenon. Therefore, while Ukrainians can expect a shift in conditions, they should prepare for renewed frost in the immediate future.

Ukraine's weather remains unpredictable. Although meteorologists forecast a temporary respite from the extreme cold, frigid temperatures will persist. These significant temperature fluctuations can impact daily life, affecting transportation infrastructure and the national energy grid. Given the ongoing conflict, such strain on utilities is a serious concern. It is crucial to follow expert safety advice during this period of severe cold.
