Linguist Alexander Avramenko Denies Rumors of Escape Abroad

Linguist Alexander Avramenko has refuted claims that he fled Ukraine for Spain after the full-scale invasion began, despite wartime travel restrictions for men. The rumors, which began circulating on social media on March 2, prompted activists to file a formal request with the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, urging an assessment of his professional conduct. This incident highlights the intense scrutiny public figures face during the ongoing conflict.

Avramenko, a linguist and author of school textbooks, is currently collaborating with the publishing house Gramota to develop a complete educational package for 10th and 5th grades. The package includes:

  • calendar-thematic plans,
  • textbooks,
  • electronic supplements,
  • workbooks.

However, activists, citing a letter from the investigative agency Syla Ukrayiny (Strength of Ukraine), are demanding a legal and ethical review of his activities.

Ongoing Debate Surrounding the Linguist's Activities

Notably, speculation about Avramenko's potential departure from the country first emerged last year. Previously, he was a regular commentator on the 1+1 TV channel and maintained an active Instagram blog, posting photos almost daily.

“I looked up the so-called 'Syla Ukrayiny' Agency of Journalistic Investigations. I found no information about this organization's activities. There is, however, a Facebook page for this agency. I saw several dozen posts there, but not a single like (positive or negative) under them. This is illustrative material about true and fake information for a school textbook (there is such a topic in the curriculum). I'm taking it to work to develop critical thinking in students.”

Thus, the situation surrounding Alexander Avramenko remains tense, with his work continuing to spark debate among the public and activists.

The Avramenko case underscores the critical need for verifying information during wartime, when rumors and disinformation can have severe consequences. Under martial law, activists and the public rightly demand transparency and accountability from public figures, especially in the education sector. This situation may serve as a reference point for future discussions on ethics and professional responsibility during a national crisis.
