She emphasized that 'dodatok' is a direct calque from Russian, derived from the Russian word 'prilozheniya.' By contrast, the English word 'application' in the sense of a program comes from the verb 'to apply,' which translates to 'zastosovuvaty' (to apply) in Ukrainian, not 'dodavaty' (to add).
For software on smartphones, tablets, or computers, Vasylieva recommends exclusively using 'zastosunok.' This distinction helps align Ukrainian tech vocabulary with the original English meaning.
Common Misconceptions and the Value of Precision
Vasylieva also addressed a widespread misunderstanding in modern Ukrainian: many believe the word 'rokovyny' should only refer to sad anniversaries, while 'richnytsya' is reserved for happy occasions. She corrected this notion, noting that both terms have broader usage.
