New Standard for Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation
Ukraine’s Ministry of Health has officially approved its first standardized protocol for hematopoietic stem cell (bone marrow) transplantation in both adults and children. This landmark document establishes uniform rules for the procedure, covering patient referral pathways, required diagnostic tests, donor matching criteria, and post-operative monitoring.
Formally named “Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation in Adults and Children,” the standard was enacted by a Ministry of Health decree. Treatment decisions must now be made by a multidisciplinary team, including hematologists, anesthesiologists, geneticists, and other specialists. Each patient receives a personalized treatment plan tailored to their specific disease profile.
The Transplantation Procedure
Before transplantation, a comprehensive evaluation of both the patient and donor is required. This includes:
- assessment of organ function;
- laboratory tests;
- HLA-based donor matching;
- risk evaluation.
The standard also outlines conditioning regimens—the preparatory phase before transplantation—which are selected on a case-by-case basis. Significant attention is given to post-transplant medical care, including prevention of graft-versus-host disease, infection control, and long-term follow-up.
Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is used to treat leukemias, lymphomas, anemias, and other blood and immune system disorders. Currently, 13 medical facilities in Ukraine perform these transplants, with three capable of conducting allogeneic transplants from unrelated donors. According to official data, 126 hematopoietic stem cell transplants were performed in Ukraine during the first quarter of 2026, 13 of which were for children.
This new standard represents a major step forward for Ukraine’s healthcare system, imposing stricter requirements on treatment quality and patient safety. By introducing a unified framework for transplantation, the policy aims to improve treatment outcomes, reduce patient risks, and ultimately strengthen public trust in the country’s medical infrastructure.
