IPC Bans Ukrainian Team's Map-Emblazoned Uniform for 2026 Paralympics, Forcing Last-Minute Change

IPC забороняє українську команду використовувати форму з картою на Паралімпійських іграх 2026 року, ставлячи під загрозу підготовку.

Uniform Featuring Map of Ukraine Banned

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has prohibited Ukrainian athletes from wearing a uniform featuring a map of Ukraine at the 2026 Paralympic Games. This decision stems from IPC regulations that forbid national anthems, motivational words, public or political messages, and slogans tied to national identity. As a country's map falls under this category, one element of the National Paralympic Committee of Ukraine's (NPC Ukraine) uniform design for the 2026 Games was not approved. This ruling highlights the ongoing tension between national expression and the IPC's neutrality policies.

In response, NPC Ukraine urgently proposed an alternative design, which the IPC approved. The team's uniform was created by designer Viktor Anisimov. The new kits were rushed by bus to Italy, where the team is already located. Valeriy Sushkevych, head of NPC Ukraine, stated:

“We barely managed to produce the new uniform, we barely made it. We urgently transported this new uniform by bus to Italy, where our entire team is already located. We could have dressed our men and women here in the uniform that was already ready, but it was banned.”

Opening Ceremony Boycott Announced

Separately, the IPC announced that representatives from Russia and Belarus would be permitted to compete under their national flags. In protest, Ukraine has decided to boycott the Games' opening ceremony. A number of other European nations have joined this boycott. Ukraine's public broadcaster, Suspilne, will not air the opening ceremony as a protest, though it will broadcast all competitions featuring Ukrainian Paralympians. A decision regarding the closing ceremony has not yet been announced.

Valeriy Sushkevych also expressed his frustration:

“We prepared our sports, no – not even sports, but ceremonial uniform for our team. The International Paralympic Committee said: 'No, no, no – this will not do!' Allegedly, this uniform is political.”

This situation underscores the complex relationship between sports organizations and global politics. The ban on the map uniform and the boycott of the opening ceremony serve as significant symbols of protest by Ukraine against decisions it views as violating sporting ethics. The collective boycott reflects heightened tensions in international sports, particularly in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine, and may influence future interactions on the world stage.
