Kristalina Georgieva's Visit to Kyiv

On January 15, the head of the International Monetary Fund, Kristalina Georgieva, arrived in Kyiv for negotiations with Ukrainian officials and discussions on the progress of the loan program. During her visit, Georgieva will meet with:

  • the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky,
  • Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenco,
  • the head of the tax committee Andrii Pyshny.

This visit is important as Georgieva last visited Ukraine in February 2023. In November 2023, Ukraine and the IMF reached a preliminary agreement on a four-year lending program totaling $8.2 billion. This program aims to support the country amidst significant financing deficits estimated at around $136.5 billion through 2029.

Cooperation with the IMF

Danylo Hetmantsev, head of the committee on finance, tax, and customs policy, stated that Ukraine needs to continue cooperation with the IMF to secure $60 billion over the next two years. This underscores the importance of Georgieva's visit and the negotiations taking place in Kyiv, as the implementation of the loan program is crucial for Ukraine's financial stability. In November 2025, an agreement was reached at the staff level on a new lending program totaling $8.2 billion, which also highlights the duration and strategic nature of cooperation between Ukraine and the IMF.

Kristalina Georgieva's visit to Kyiv comes against the backdrop of a challenging economic situation in Ukraine, particularly due to the war and associated costs. Cooperation with the IMF is critically important for ensuring financial stability and fulfilling budget commitments. A successful conclusion to the negotiations could represent a significant step towards securing the necessary resources and supporting the country's economic recovery.
