How the 'Unbreakable' Program Is Transforming Veterans' Lives

Ukraine’s Ministry of Internal Affairs, in partnership with OBOZ.UA, is advancing its 'Unbreakable' campaign—a sports-based recovery initiative. This effort highlights three coaches who are helping veterans rebuild their confidence and improve their well-being through athletic training. For context, this program is part of a broader national push to support those who have served, using physical activity as a tool for both mental and physical healing.

  • Yuliia Yelistratova, a lead inspector at the Main Department of the National Police in Zhytomyr region, recalls a particularly memorable moment: a veteran who initially hoped to swim just two pool lengths was told he would instead do 100 meters plus 50 meters on command. After the initial shock, that challenge became a powerful motivator to keep pushing forward.

  • Taras Moroz, a lecturer at Lviv State University of Internal Affairs and a swimming coach for the 'Unbreakable' project, notes that when veterans enter the pool, their injuries and psychological states fade into the background, making them all alike. He describes them as childlike in their joy, eager to compete and prove who is faster in the lane.

  • Maksym Krypak, a Honored Master of Sports of Ukraine and a ten-time Paralympic champion, serves as a coach for the 'Unbreakable' project in Kharkiv. He emphasizes that water is his element, and he knows firsthand how it can heal the body and strengthen the spirit.

The 'Unbreakable' initiative continues to shape veterans’ lives by offering them a path to recovery and renewed strength through sport.

Why the 'Unbreakable' Initiative Matters

This program represents a critical step in supporting veterans dealing with both psychological and physical trauma. By engaging sports coaches and creating opportunities for physical activity, it helps veterans not only regain their fitness but also rebuild social connections and a sense of community. Such projects could serve as a model for other rehabilitation and support efforts across Ukraine.

As the 'Unbreakable' initiative paves the way for veterans' recovery through sports, it complements other significant efforts, such as the recent launch of a swimming rehabilitation campaign for injured soldiers across 21 cities in Ukraine. These programs collectively emphasize the importance of physical activity in healing both body and mind, showcasing a comprehensive approach to veteran support.
