Bohdan Drapyatyi's Role in Legislative Coordination
Bohdan Drapyatyi, Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, participated in a working group focused on aligning draft laws No. 5708 and No. 5709, which address the regulation of civilian firearms, with European Union legal frameworks. This meeting was organized with support from the EU Advisory Mission in Ukraine. The primary goal of these legislative initiatives is to establish clear and efficient firearms regulations, enhance government oversight, and modernize Ukrainian laws to comply with European standards while considering the country’s unique security challenges, as Drapyatyi emphasized.
As of November 25, 2024, nearly 25,000 firearms have been officially declared in Ukraine, along with approximately 15 million rounds of ammunition. Over 22,000 citizens have registered their weapons. In response, the Ministry of Internal Affairs has drafted a Roadmap aimed at combating illegal firearms circulation, with a target implementation date set for 2030. This strategy outlines six key priorities:
- Establishing legislative frameworks and advancing European integration;
- Ensuring comprehensive control over the entire firearms lifecycle;
- Strengthening law enforcement capabilities;
- Implementing digital record-keeping systems;
- Promoting a culture of responsible firearm ownership;
- Enhancing international cooperation.
"The Ministry of Internal Affairs and the National Police support the legislative regulation of civilian firearms circulation. However, these laws must be adapted to meet European requirements while reflecting Ukraine's security realities," stated Bohdan Drapyatyi.
This initiative marks a crucial advancement toward improving firearms control in Ukraine and reducing risks associated with illegal weapons trafficking.
