Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry Sets the Record Straight
Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has dismissed any suggestion that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s decision to change airports for his travels is linked to rising tensions between Kyiv and Warsaw. Spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi stated that the matter carries no political undertones. Instead of using the usual hub in Rzeszów, Poland, Zelenskyy flew out of Chișinău Airport for an international trip to the United Kingdom. Rzeszów had previously served as the primary logistics base for Ukrainian official visits.
Strained Relations
Relations between Ukraine and Poland took a turn for the worse in late May 2026. The friction followed President Zelenskyy’s decision to grant an honorary designation—naming a Special Operations Forces unit after the Heroes of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). Warsaw criticized the move, citing historical assessments of the UPA’s role and the Volyn tragedy of 1943–1945.
“I’ve seen this connection being made. It feels artificial to me. The president’s logistics are handled separately by his protocol service. Let’s not politicize logistics, and especially avoid drawing undue attention to them for security reasons. There is no political dimension here, and there’s no need to look for one.”

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk also commented on Zelenskyy’s decision to fly via Chișinău, signaling that the situation between the two nations is being closely watched. With diplomatic relations potentially under strain, it is essential to focus on facts and steer clear of speculation.
This episode highlights the need for clear communication between Ukraine and Poland, especially given historical disagreements that can still shape modern political ties.
