Deadly Encounter in Khmelnytskyi Region
On May 15, Police Captain Serhiy Chornyi lost his life during a pursuit of a driver who was violating the law in the Khmelnytskyi region. Captain Chornyi, an inspector with the patrol police response unit at Department No. 3 of the Khmelnytskyi District Administration, sustained fatal injuries. His partner, Senior Lieutenant Vladyslav Sandetskyi, suffered a gunshot wound in the same incident.
The situation escalated when a police patrol chased a driver who had been legally stripped of his driving privileges. The suspect stopped in the village of Terlivka and fled onto his own property. A burst of automatic gunfire erupted from the yard, instantly killing Captain Chornyi. In self-defense, Lieutenant Sandetskyi returned fire with his service weapon, during which he was wounded. The attacker then escaped from the scene. This case highlights the ongoing dangers faced by law enforcement in Ukraine, where officers regularly confront armed suspects.
Investigation and Public Reaction
Authorities have opened a criminal investigation under Article 348 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code. At the scene, investigators recovered an empty magazine for an automatic weapon and shell casings of 5.45 caliber. The National Police of Ukraine provided the information, as reported by Khvylia.
