Corruption Scheme Selling Draft Exemptions Dismantled in Western Ukraine
A corruption scheme involving the sale of draft deferrals has been shut down in Ukraine's Ivano-Frankivsk region. A deputy chief of the regional State Emergency Service (DSNS), in collaboration with officials from the local Ukrzaliznytsia railway branch, organized the sale of positions that guaranteed exemption from military mobilization. The price for this illegal service was set at $5,000, with payments made in two installments: the first half paid upfront before paperwork was processed, and the remainder after confirmation of the deferral was received.
The DSNS official was apprehended while receiving the second payment of $2,500. Searches conducted by authorities uncovered cash, employment documentation, and other material evidence confirming the systematic nature of the illegal operation. The official has been formally notified of suspicion under Part 5 of Article 27 and Part 3 of Article 368 of Ukraine's Criminal Code. This case highlights the ongoing challenges Ukraine faces in combating corruption within its state institutions during wartime.
Legal Proceedings and Potential Penalties
A court has ordered the detained official to be held in custody, with the option of posting bail. Under current Ukrainian law, the charges he faces carry a potential penalty of up to 10 years of imprisonment with confiscation of property.
