Racist Incident at a Children's Studio in Kriukivshchyna
Police in the Kyiv region have opened a pretrial investigation after a video surfaced showing racist abuse aimed at a 36-year-old woman originally from Nigeria and her six-year-old daughter. The confrontation took place at a children's acrobatics studio in Kriukivshchyna, located in the Bucha district. In the recording, another visitor can be heard objecting to the studio serving the woman and her child because of their ethnic background. Law enforcement found the clip while monitoring social media.
During an acrobatics lesson, a studio visitor began hurling insults at the Nigerian-born woman and her daughter. The video of the dispute was posted by one of the studio's instructors. In it, the offender says: "Let them go back to their Africa, eat bananas from a palm. Ukrainians are Slavs, we have Slavic genetics. We are Ukrainians, they are Africans." Police have registered the case in the Unified Register of Pretrial Investigations under Part 1 of Article 161 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which covers violations of citizens' equality based on race.
Investigation and Public Reaction
Investigators have identified those involved in the conflict and are now working to establish all the circumstances. The episode has drawn attention to discrimination in Ukraine: surveys indicate that 45% of citizens believe discrimination based on language exists in the country, while 34% point to discrimination based on sexual orientation.
In response to such challenges, the State Service of Ukraine for Ethnopolitics and Freedom of Conscience has presented a draft law for public discussion that would update anti-discrimination protections, including a legal definition of hate speech.
