Suspects Face Charges for Counterfeit Fuel Production and Distribution
Law enforcement in the Kyiv region has formally charged a group of individuals with organizing the production and sale of counterfeit fuel. The suspects operated a self-contained illegal business, which included a private oil depot and a network of unlicensed filling stations. The illicit fuel was stored at a depot in the Bila Tserkva district of Kyiv Oblast, where the stations operated without quality certificates and failed to report sales of excisable goods. This type of operation undermines state revenue and poses significant risks to vehicle engines and public safety.
Scale of the Operation and Seized Assets
During authorized searches of the stations and the depot, detectives confiscated a substantial haul, including:
- over 57,000 liters of gasoline;
- nearly 85,000 liters of diesel fuel;
- 4,500 liters of liquefied gas;
- 29 storage tanks;
- a gas distribution column;
- six fuel dispensers;
- pumping equipment;
- cargo trucks with tankers;
- financial and business documents;
- handwritten ledgers;
- mobile phones;
- over 18 million hryvnias in cash and equivalent.
The organizer and four accomplices have been notified of the charges, and the pre-trial investigation is ongoing. The estimated value of the seized fuel and lubricants exceeds 8 million hryvnias. The crackdown highlights the persistent challenge of fuel smuggling in Ukraine, which deprives the state budget of vital tax income. For context, recent market analysis shows the highest retail gasoline prices are found at Okko and WOG stations, while BRSM-Nafta and Ukrnafta typically offer more affordable fuel.
This case underscores the broader issue of Ukraine's illegal fuel market, which threatens not only the economy but also consumer safety. Abuses in fuel distribution can cause significant financial damage to the state, as counterfeit products evade taxation and quality control. Investigating such schemes is crucial for strengthening legislation and raising public awareness about the risks associated with purchasing illegal fuel.
