Arrest for Illegal Weapon Possession
During a police response to a domestic violence complaint filed by a woman against her 54-year-old husband in the Vyshhorod district, authorities discovered and confiscated a hand-held anti-tank grenade. The suspect, who was intoxicated at the time, had the explosive found in his garage. A subsequent search of his residence also uncovered a firearm. This incident highlights a troubling intersection of domestic abuse and illegal weaponry in the region.
Police detained the man under Article 208 of Ukraine’s Criminal Procedure Code, and he is currently held in a temporary detention facility. The investigation is being overseen by the Vyshhorod District Prosecutor’s Office. The suspect has been formally charged under Part 1 of Article 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which covers the illegal carrying, storage, and acquisition of ammunition—an offense carrying a prison sentence of three to seven years. Additionally, authorities have issued an administrative citation under Part 1 of Article 173-2 of the Code of Administrative Offenses for domestic violence. The administrative case has been forwarded to court, while the pre-trial criminal investigation continues.
Voluntary Firearms Declaration in Kyiv Region
Separately, a voluntary firearms declaration process is ongoing in the Kyiv region. According to official data, 219 individuals have approached the Obukhiv district police department, reporting ownership of 235 firearms. In total, 64,447 rounds of ammunition have been declared. The breakdown of declared weapons includes:
- 88 automatic weapons
- 101 smoothbore shotguns
- 21 pistols or revolvers
- 25 rifled carbines and rifles
Residents of the district have also voluntarily surrendered 25 additional weapons and 158 rounds of ammunition.
This case underscores the urgent issue of illegal weapons in Ukraine, particularly in the context of domestic violence. The arrest not only highlights serious criminal offenses but also the critical role of law enforcement in responding to family violence reports.
The ongoing voluntary declaration initiative in the Kyiv region could be a significant step toward reducing illegal firearms and improving public safety in the area.
This recent incident is not an isolated case, as authorities continue to uncover illegal weapon caches in the region. For instance, a recent report highlights a significant discovery of hidden grenades and ammunition in Kyiv, emphasizing the alarming prevalence of unregistered firearms and explosives within the community. Such findings raise serious concerns about public safety and the effectiveness of current regulations.
