Nearly 14,600 Lithium-Ion Batteries Seized in Van Smuggling Attempt at Border

На кордоні затримано вантажівку із майже 14,600 акумуляторами літій-іонного типу при спробі контрабанди.

Illegal Shipment of Lithium-Ion Batteries Stopped at Checkpoint

On June 7, 2026, authorities at the Krakivets-Korczowa border crossing in the Lviv region intercepted a smuggling operation involving 14,615 lithium-ion batteries. The cargo, valued at roughly 1.2 million Ukrainian hryvnias, was being transported in two Mercedes vans traveling from Warsaw to Lviv. The discovery was made by a joint inspection team of border guards and customs officers during a routine vehicle check.

According to border officials, the driver of the first van, a 38-year-old man, attempted to smuggle 6,358 batteries. He had picked up the shipment in Warsaw and was supposed to deliver it to Lviv. The second van, driven by a 33-year-old man, carried 8,257 batteries, also destined for Lviv from Warsaw. Both vehicles initially passed through the green channel but were flagged for an in-depth inspection in a specialized bay.

Outcome of the Inspection

The total haul of confiscated batteries reached 14,615 units. The entire illicit shipment has been seized and is now stored in a licensed customs warehouse. Both drivers face formal charges for customs violations, specifically for concealing goods, and their case files have been forwarded to court for further proceedings.

This incident highlights the critical role of border control checkpoints and the proactive stance of law enforcement in combating smuggling. Given the rising volume of illegal cross-border trade, such cases underscore the need for tighter customs oversight and stronger coordination among agencies to prevent future offenses.

This recent seizure of lithium-ion batteries at the border is not an isolated incident, as law enforcement continues to tackle various forms of smuggling. For instance, authorities in Kyiv recently apprehended two individuals attempting to illegally transport draft-eligible men out of Ukraine for a significant sum. Such operations highlight the ongoing challenges faced by border control agencies in maintaining security and enforcing regulations.
