Hours-Long Queues at Romania Border Triggered by New EES System

Тривалі черги на кордоні з Румунією через впровадження нової системи EES.

Gridlock at the Porubne-Siret Checkpoint

Travelers face major disruptions at the Ukrainian-Romanian border, especially at the Porubne-Siret crossing, where lengthy queues are making passage extremely difficult. Bus passengers now endure wait times ranging from 5 to 10 hours. Andriy Demchenko, a spokesperson for the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, highlighted the surge in passenger volume at this location. On weekdays, at least 125,000 people cross the border, while Saturday saw a record high of 147,000 individuals.

The Porubne-Siret checkpoint ranks among the busiest along the Ukrainian-Romanian frontier. Since the start of summer, passengers on international bus routes have been experiencing delays, which become particularly severe in the late afternoon and overnight. As of 9:00 AM, the heaviest traffic congestion heading out of Ukraine was recorded at the Porubne checkpoint, where nearly 40 vehicles were lined up.

'But on weekdays, at least 125,000 citizens cross the border. One day may see more traffic leaving Ukraine, while another day may see more entering Ukraine. Over the last two days, the trend has favored entry into Ukraine. This applies to Sunday and Monday,' — Andriy Demchenko.

The delays stem from seasonal travel volumes and the rollout of the new Entry/Exit System (EES), now operational across 29 Schengen Zone countries. EES applies to non-EU citizens, permitting stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. On their first border crossing under EES, travelers must have their photo taken and provide fingerprints (for individuals aged 12 and over). This data is used to create a digital profile, which also includes passport details, the date and location of the border crossing (or any entry denial). For all subsequent trips, the system simply verifies information against the existing profile.

Advice for Travelers

To help travelers stay informed about checkpoint congestion, updates are posted every three hours on the Facebook page of the Western Regional Directorate of the State Border Guard Service.

Despite the significant backups, queues are virtually nonexistent on weekdays, especially in the morning hours. 'Most checkpoints have zero queues,' noted Andriy Demchenko. This suggests that those planning a trip should carefully choose their crossing time to avoid delays.

The situation at the Ukraine-Romania border illustrates how seasonal passenger flows and new technologies are reshaping border crossing experiences. While the implementation of the EES system marks a key step in modernizing border controls, it also requires time for travelers to adapt. With regular updates on checkpoint congestion available, travelers can plan their journeys more efficiently.

The ongoing challenges at the Porubne-Siret checkpoint are not unique, as similar issues have been reported at other border crossings. For instance, the situation at the Polish border has led to record wait times, highlighting the broader impact of increased passenger traffic and new border control measures. Understanding these trends can provide valuable insights for travelers navigating the region.
