Railway Fatality
A 19-year-old resident of Stryi died after being struck by a freight train on June 20 at approximately 4:50 PM. The incident occurred while the young man was lying on the railroad tracks. He suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. Investigators from the Stryi District Police Department have opened criminal proceedings under Part 3 of Article 276 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which addresses violations of safety regulations in railway, water, or air transport operations.
This article carries a penalty of five to ten years in prison. The tragedy adds to a series of recent railway accidents in Ukraine. For instance, on the night of May 23, a passenger train from Zakarpattia struck a young man in Lviv, and in the city of Vyshneve in the Kyiv region, a minor died under the wheels of an electric train running between Fastiv and Kyiv. These incidents highlight the critical need for strict adherence to safety rules near railway tracks.
Railway Safety Concerns
This tragedy and similar incidents point to serious safety issues on Ukraine’s railways. It is essential for the public to understand the dangers of being on or near train tracks, and for authorities to take action to improve transport safety. Educational campaigns, in particular, could help reduce the number of accidents caused by safety violations.
This tragic incident in Lviv is not an isolated case, as railway accidents continue to raise serious concerns across Ukraine.
