Teenager Kidnapped in Lviv Region
Four men have been detained in the Lviv region for the abduction of a 17-year-old boy, whom they held for two days while demanding repayment of a fictitious debt. The incident, which began on February 21, involved the kidnappers demanding 400,000 Russian rubles from the victim. This case highlights ongoing challenges with organized crime and extortion in the region, even amidst the ongoing war with Russia.
The perpetrators bound the teenager's hands and feet with plastic zip ties and construction tape. They subjected him to physical and psychological violence, including death threats, after he denied owing any money and refused to pay. The ordeal continued until February 23, when police located the premises where the victim was being held captive.
Case Details and Legal Consequences
The victim was held inside a closet and managed to call the police only after two days in captivity. Notably, the teenager was acquainted with his kidnappers, having previously worked with three of them at a commercial enterprise in Lviv. The fourth suspect was a martial arts trainer at the same organization. According to the prosecutor's office, after the minor was re-hired at this workplace, three of his 'colleagues' began demanding he repay a non-existent debt.
The detained men have been formally notified of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 146 and Part 4 of Article 189 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. They are now in custody without the right to post bail and face up to 12 years of imprisonment with confiscation of property. Ukrainian law prescribes severe penalties for kidnapping and extortion, especially when involving violence against minors.
This incident underscores serious issues of violence and extortion targeting young people and emphasizes the critical importance of law enforcement's rapid response to such crimes. The police's swift action in locating the victim likely prevented further violence. The situation also raises concerns about youth safety and the need for greater oversight in environments where young people work together.
