Evacuation Alert Issued on ISS Due to Air Leak

On June 5, 2026, an evacuation readiness alert was declared aboard the International Space Station (ISS) following an air leak detected in the Russian Zvezda module. NASA ordered all four members of the SpaceX Crew-12 mission, including NASA astronaut Chris Williams, to take enhanced safety measures inside the Dragon spacecraft.

The directive from NASA was issued at 9:04 AM Eastern Time (4:04 PM Kyiv time). The Crew-12 mission consists of:

  • two American astronauts
  • one French astronaut
  • one Russian cosmonaut

The leak, which initially measured 0.45 kilograms per day, later increased to 0.9 kilograms per day. Repairs are currently underway in the Zvezda service module.

NASA spokesperson Bethany Stevens stated: 'Out of an abundance of caution, NASA directed all four SpaceX Crew-12 agency crew members and NASA astronaut Chris Williams to transition to a heightened safety posture inside the Dragon spacecraft while repairs continue.'

This incident highlights the critical importance of safety protocols in space missions and the need for rapid responses to unforeseen events. The repair work on the Zvezda module is ongoing, and the crew's next steps will depend on the outcome of these efforts.

An air leak on the ISS represents a serious situation, as crew safety remains the top priority for NASA and other space agencies. This event demonstrates how quickly conditions can change in orbit and what decisions must be made to protect astronauts' lives. Updates on the Zvezda module repairs and the safety of the Crew-12 crew will be essential for ensuring the ISS's continued stable operation.
