Emergency Traffic Restrictions Imposed on Kyiv's Paton Bridge

Тимчасові обмеження руху запроваджені на мосту Патона в Києві.

Traffic Restrictions on the Paton Bridge

Authorities have partially restricted vehicle access in the first lane of Kyiv's Paton Bridge, affecting the direction from the left to the right bank. This measure is due to urgent repair work expected to continue until approximately May 14. During a routine technical inspection, a defect was discovered in the closed-type expansion joint of the concrete bridge deck slabs. The bridge's condition has raised serious concerns, as it has been classified as emergency-prone since 2017.

Technical Findings and Urgent Repairs

According to conclusions from a technical meeting in early March 2026, the bridge is deemed fit for continued operation only if restrictions are followed. Vyacheslav Bogdanov stated that

"the technical state of the Paton Bridge in Kyiv has reached a critical point, and its continued use without immediate repairs threatens catastrophic consequences"
. The last planned structural inspection, conducted in 2025 by the Ukrainian Institute of Steel Structures named after V.M. Shimanovsky, revealed new alarming evidence:
"significant defects and damage are already substantially affecting the overall reliability of the structure"
.

To ensure safety and reliability, restoration work is required based on inspection results. The 72-year-old bridge is a locally recognized architectural landmark. According to Bogdanov,

"the Paton Bridge... has been in an emergency state since 2017"
. The conclusion regarding the bridge's suitability for use was made by experts from the Ukrainian Institute of Steel Structures named after V.M. Shimanovsky and the municipal enterprise Kyivavtoshliakhmist.

These repair efforts represent a critical step in ensuring user safety. The Kyiv City State Administration is actively monitoring the situation and taking steps to improve the bridge's technical condition.

The situation with the Paton Bridge highlights the importance of regular infrastructure inspections, especially for aging structures. The urgent repairs now underway may prevent serious accidents and ensure traffic safety on this key transport artery. Continuous monitoring and timely maintenance of bridges are vital for protecting public safety and preserving historical architectural landmarks.
