Chinese Robots Mimic Putin’s Gait at SPIEF 2026 Forum

Китайські роботи повторюють ходу лідера Росії на форумі SPIEF 2026.

St. Petersburg International Economic Forum 2026

On June 3, 2026, the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) kicked off in Russia’s second-largest city. Among the exhibits were humanoid robots supplied by Chinese firm Unitree Robotics. However, these machines failed to carry out their programmed tasks—they ignored commands, mixed up responses, and refused handshakes. One robot, designed to work as a warehouse keeper, displayed such poor coordination that it left attendees bewildered.

Strikingly, the robots’ walking style bore a strong resemblance to the distinctive stride of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. This did not go unnoticed and sparked lively discussion among forum participants. Meanwhile, just before the forum opened, Ukrainian drones launched an attack on St. Petersburg, adding a layer of tension to the event. A fire broke out at the city’s oil terminal, underscoring the fraught atmosphere.

Technology Meets Politics

To ask a question to the android, guests first had to get the text pre-approved by forum security. The robots were programmed to speak Russian, but their conversational abilities turned out to be severely limited. On social media, users joked that “the humanoid robots are just looking for happiness,” as their performance raised far more questions than it answered.

  • Social media users also noted that “the latest long-range Ukrainian drones were brilliantly showcased—with one catch: they flew there on their own, uninvited.”
  • This highlights not only technological advances but also the political tensions surrounding the event.

In this way, SPIEF-2026 served not just as an economic platform but also as a stage for debating pressing political and technological issues.

The situation at SPIEF-2026 reflects the complex dynamics between technological achievements and political challenges on the international stage. On one hand, advances in robotics showcase technological progress, but the humanoids’ functional problems raise doubts about their practical use. On the other hand, the Ukrainian drone strikes underscore the growing friction between Ukraine and Russia, adding an extra layer of context to the forum as a key international venue for discussing economic and political matters.
