Body of Kenyan Citizen Found on Russian Front Lines, Along with Passports of Two Others

Знайдено тіло громадянина Кенії на лінії фронту в Росії разом з паспортами ще двох осіб.

The Death of Clinton Nyapara Mogesi

The body of a deceased Kenyan national, Clinton Nyapara Mogesi, was discovered at a position held by Russian occupation forces. According to Ukraine's Defense Ministry's Main Intelligence Directorate, Mogesi had signed a contract with the Russian armed forces. Born in 1997, he had been living and working in Qatar before becoming involved in combat operations on the Ukrainian front. The discovery highlights Russia's ongoing recruitment of foreign nationals to bolster its forces in Ukraine.

Intelligence reports state that Mogesi was assigned to an assault unit of the occupation forces and was killed during an assault in the Donetsk region. Russian forces did not evacuate his body, and his family has received neither compensation nor explanations from the Russian side. Furthermore, the deceased mercenary was found in possession of passports belonging to two other Kenyan citizens, indicating a broader pattern of recruiting foreigners to fight for Russia.

Recruitment of Mercenaries from Cuba and Nepal

In a related development, the arrival of mercenaries from Cuba and Nepal was observed in temporarily occupied territories in March 2024. An employee of the Russian Academy of Sciences was reportedly responsible for recruiting Cuban citizens to participate in combat against Ukraine. Cuban nationals were initially invited to work on construction projects but were later issued military uniforms and contracts with the Russian Ministry of Defense. Reports indicate that in the Donetsk region, Cuban mercenaries killed their own commander.

Ukraine's Main Intelligence Directorate warns foreign citizens against traveling to Russia or undertaking any work on its territory, especially illegally.

"Clinton Mogesi could have continued to live and work in safe and prosperous Qatar. Instead, he became yet more proof that for the Russian army, foreigners are merely a disposable resource, doomed to die," the intelligence agency stated.
According to them, a trip to Russia presents a real chance of ending up in an assault unit without training and with little hope of survival.

This incident underscores the severe consequences of involving foreign nationals in armed conflicts, particularly in the context of the war in Ukraine. It points to the risks faced by mercenaries who join combat on Russia's side, as well as the lack of support and guarantees from the Russian authorities. The growing number of foreigners participating in the war may reflect global trends in mercenary activity and military conflicts that require greater attention from the international community.
