Fatal Explosion Claims Lives of Two Emergency Service Workers in Shostka District
In the Shostka district of Ukraine's Sumy region, a tragic accident occurred during a humanitarian demining operation, resulting in the deaths of two rescuers from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (DSNS) — Oleksandr Kovalchuk and Denys Sydorych. The two men were carrying out their duties when a Russian explosive device detonated unexpectedly.
Oleksandr Kovalchuk, aged 32, had been serving in the DSNS for more than 15 years. He held the rank of Major in the Civil Protection Service and led the mechanized demining group. Denys Sydorych, 39, joined the DSNS in 2022 as a sapper-operator and held the rank of Master Sergeant in the Civil Protection Service. One of the sappers died instantly at the scene, while the other was rushed to the hospital but sadly could not be saved.
Condolences Offered to Families of the Fallen Rescuers
Both men left behind families. Oleksandr is survived by his wife, their 4-year-old son, and his parents. Denys also leaves a wife, an 8-year-old son, and his parents. Andriy Danyk, a DSNS spokesperson, expressed deep sympathy, stating:
“Today, the rescue community mourns a profound loss. In Sumy region, during a humanitarian demining mission, our colleagues from the Mobile Rescue Center of Rapid Response in Sumy — Major Oleksandr Kovalchuk, head of the mechanized demining group, and Master Sergeant Denys Sydorych, sapper-operator — lost their lives.” – Andriy Danyk
Danyk emphasized the painful reality of their absence, reminding that Oleksandr’s family awaited him at home, including his wife, young son, and parents, as did Denys’s family. “The grief of this loss is beyond words,” he noted, highlighting how, despite their different paths to service, both men shared unwavering dedication and a readiness to fulfill their duties wherever needed.
This incident highlights the extreme dangers faced by emergency responders during humanitarian demining operations, especially in regions affected by ongoing conflict. The deaths of these two skilled professionals represent a significant loss to the DSNS and their loved ones, underscoring the high risks rescuers accept to ensure public safety. With demining efforts continuing across Ukraine, such tragedies serve as a stark reminder of the critical need for rigorous safety protocols and support for personnel working in this perilous field.
