Border Guards Bust Group Attempting to Illegally Cross into Moldova
Authorities in Ukraine’s Vinnytsia region intercepted a Nissan SUV heading toward the border, stopping a scheme to smuggle men out of the country. The incident occurred in Tulchyn district, where officers from the Mohyliv-Podilskyi border guard unit pulled over the vehicle. Inside were men aged 25 to 52, hailing from Kyiv, Dnipro, Kropyvnytskyi, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, Chernihiv, and Odesa regions. They were attempting to illegally cross into Moldova.
How the Operation Was Organized and Its Fallout
The group’s organizer was tracked down through a popular messaging app. Each participant had paid $10,000 into a cryptocurrency wallet for the service. They received detailed instructions, real-time online support, and a prepaid hotel stay in Uman, where the whole group met. The anonymous mastermind even bought the SUV used for the trip. Among those detained was an accomplice sitting in the front passenger seat.
All individuals were held administratively liable. According to the official statement, 'However, border guards prevented the tour participants from achieving their desired outcome. The entire group was detained near the state border.'
The driver faced more serious consequences: authorities notified the National Police of potential criminal violations under Article 332 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which covers illegal transportation of persons across the state border.
In a related development, Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) and National Police dismantled another smuggling channel in Khmelnytskyi region, where organizers demanded over $10,000 per person to cross into Moldova. Meanwhile, in Kyiv, authorities arrested a different scheme organizer who offered draft-age men a way to avoid military service by posing as a military chaplain—for a fee of $25,000.
These arrests highlight the ongoing efforts of Ukrainian law enforcement to combat illegal emigration and organized crime. Smugglers are increasingly using modern technology and significant financial resources to coordinate their operations, underscoring the need for enhanced border security and stricter oversight of such networks.
This recent incident highlights a troubling trend in smuggling operations across Ukraine's borders. In a similar case, authorities have successfully dismantled another smuggling route, targeting those attempting to evade military service by crossing into Moldova for a fee of $10,000 per person.
