Verdict in the Case of Volleyball Coach Bohuslav Halytskyi

A court in the Volyn region has convicted volleyball coach Bohuslav Halytskyi of crimes against the sexual freedom and inviolability of underage female athletes. He received a prison sentence of seven years and six months. The offenses for which he was found guilty took place between 2012 and 2021.

The case was prosecuted under multiple articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:

  • Part 3 of Article 153
  • Part 2 of Article 156
  • Part 2 of Article 15
  • Part 3 of Article 152
  • Part 3 of Article 152

Halytskyi, who served as the head coach of the youth team Volyn-Universytet and also ran a children's and youth sports school, has denied any wrongdoing. Juvenile prosecutors from the Volyn Regional Prosecutor's Office and the Lutsk District Prosecutor's Office built the case over a period of four years.

The abuse came to light because the victims found the courage to speak about their experiences. The Office of the Prosecutor General noted that during the pre-trial investigation, another victim came forward—now an adult—who was still dealing with the lasting effects of the violence she had endured.

Prosecutors' Next Steps and Public Reaction

Prosecutors plan to appeal the court's ruling and will push for the maximum possible sentence for the convicted coach. This case highlights the critical need to expose crimes against minors and to support survivors in their pursuit of justice.

The case of Bohuslav Halytskyi has drawn widespread public attention, raising urgent questions about child safety in sports schools and the necessity of protecting young athletes' rights. The ongoing legal proceedings and potential appeals could mark a significant step in combating violence against minors. This high-profile case may also encourage other survivors to come forward, helping to create a safer environment for children in sports programs and schools across the country.

The case of Bohuslav Halytskyi is not an isolated incident, as similar allegations have surfaced in the sports community. For instance, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu coach is currently on trial for the rape of two 11-year-old students, highlighting a troubling pattern of abuse within youth sports. This ongoing situation underscores the urgent need for reforms to protect young athletes from predatory behavior. To learn more about this alarming case, click here.
