Teacher Convicted in Child Trafficking Case
A former boarding school teacher in the Zakarpattia region of western Ukraine has been sentenced to 10 years in prison with asset forfeiture for attempting to sell an 11-month-old boy to buyers in Spain for $25,000. Law enforcement officers apprehended the man in June 2023 at the Mali Selmentsi border checkpoint as he tried to cross the state border with the child.
The convicted individual identified a woman from Zhytomyr who was in a difficult financial situation and offered her $5,000 to give up her baby. He met with the mother twice, took photographs of the infant for the prospective buyers, assembled a package of documents, and prepared detailed instructions for crossing the border. The man also personally accompanied the woman and child to the checkpoint.
Additional Crimes and Broader Social Issues
Beyond this child trafficking case, the same individual was convicted in a separate matter in June 2025 for embezzling over 6.3 million Ukrainian hryvnias in state aid intended for the family of a fallen soldier. He exploited his position as the godfather of the deceased serviceman to carry out the fraud.
This case is not an isolated incident. Authorities have also uncovered a woman from the Volyn region who attempted to sell her six-year-old son for $25,000. In Sumy, police detained a mother trying to sell her newborn child. Such cases are raising public alarm and highlight the urgent need for stronger oversight and prevention of these crimes.
This situation underscores serious social challenges facing some families in Ukraine, particularly economic hardships that can push individuals to desperate and illegal actions.
The frequency of attempted child sales points to the critical necessity of tightening legal controls and expanding social support for vulnerable populations to prevent similar offenses in the future.
The alarming trend of child trafficking in Ukraine is further illustrated by another recent case where a mother sold her two children for a mere $1,000, intending to force them into begging. This disturbing situation highlights the desperate measures some individuals are taking due to severe economic pressures.
