Border Patrol Bust in Zakarpattia
Authorities in western Ukraine's Zakarpattia region have apprehended three men for attempting to smuggle draft-eligible individuals across the border using an ambulance. The incident occurred at the Nyzhni Vorota checkpoint. The driver, a 48-year-old from Kherson region, received 24,000 hryvnias to transport two passengers from Kyiv region, who were reportedly planning to flee the country. The total cost of the escape was set at $15,000. One of the passengers was already wanted for evading military mobilization.
Ambulance as a Smuggling Cover
The ambulance belonged to a non-governmental organization that typically transports the bodies of fallen soldiers. During inspection, border guards discovered that none of the occupants were medical personnel. The driver had picked up the clients in the capital and was to deliver them to Zakarpattia for illegal crossing into a neighboring country. According to police in Zakarpattia, the vehicle was used as a cover to move draft-age men through checkpoints toward the border region.
The ambulance driver has been detained and placed in pretrial detention. Meanwhile, border guards have noted a shift in escape routes, with fugitives now opting for the Dniester River instead of the Tysa. In March, guards from the Mohyliv-Podilskyi unit thwarted an attempt to illegally cross into Moldova when a group of men tried to swim the Dniester at night using inflatable mattresses. Investigators are now working to identify other individuals involved in this case.
This incident highlights a growing problem of humanitarian resources being repurposed for mobilization evasion. The use of ambulances—vehicles meant to save lives—reveals the lengths some citizens will go to avoid military service. Law enforcement continues to intensify efforts to prevent such attempts, reflecting the seriousness of the situation amid Ukraine's ongoing military obligations.
This incident is part of a larger trend in Ukraine, where various smuggling operations are being uncovered. Recently, a police investigation in the Kyiv region revealed a smuggling ring charging $25,000 for facilitating draft evasion. Such schemes highlight the increasing desperation among individuals seeking to avoid military service.
