The 'Midas' Case and Its Aftermath

Newly released recordings from Ukraine's National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) in the so-called 'Midas' case have stirred controversy. The audio captures a conversation between former presidential aide Serhiy Shefir and businessman Timur Mindich, in which Shefir allegedly tells Mindich that he is handing over half of the income earned from lawmakers Yuriy Kisel and Oleksandr Sova. The recording is dated to summer 2025.

To provide context, this case is part of a broader anti-corruption crackdown in Ukraine. At the end of December 2025, lawmaker Kisel was officially notified of suspicion by NABU and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) for his alleged involvement in a criminal group that paid bribes to other members of parliament. On November 10, 2025, NABU announced suspicion notices for seven individuals under the 'Midas' operation. Among them was Timur Mindich, who appears in the recordings under the codename 'Karlson.' Others who received suspicion notices include:

  • Ihor Myronyuk, former advisor to the Minister of Energy;
  • Dmytro Basov, executive director for security at the state company 'Energoatom';
  • Oleksandr Tsukerman;
  • Ihor Fursenko;
  • Lesya Ustymenko;
  • Lyudmyla Zorina.

Herman Halushchenko, referred to on the tapes by the codenames 'Professor' and 'Sigismund,' was arrested on February 17, 2026. On April 15, the High Anti-Corruption Court extended his pre-trial detention. As of February 26, he was being held in a standard cell without any special privileges, alongside three other inmates.

It is worth noting that NABU has submitted materials to the Prosecutor General's Office for the extradition of Timur Mindich. The extradition request has been pending at that office for two weeks as of this report. The 'Midas' case, which has drawn significant public attention, continues to unfold, with those implicated facing serious legal consequences.

Impact on Society

High-level corruption cases in Ukraine typically generate widespread public outcry, as they erode trust in state institutions. The developments surrounding the 'Midas' case underscore the critical role of anti-corruption investigations in promoting transparency and accountability within the government. The trajectory of this case could significantly shape the country's political landscape and influence future anti-corruption efforts in Ukraine.

The ongoing investigations surrounding the 'Midas' case are not limited to the recent revelations involving Serhiy Shefir. Similar recordings have emerged concerning Defense Minister Umerov, highlighting critical issues related to drones and body armor. These developments underscore the extensive nature of the anti-corruption efforts in Ukraine. For more details on this aspect of the 'Midas' case, you can read about the recordings involving Umerov.
