Parcel Locker Network Expansion
Ukraine's state postal service, Ukrposhta, has broadened its parcel locker network by introducing a new service in Odesa, Mykolaiv, Vinnytsia, and Khmelnytskyi. CEO Ihor Smilianskyi announced the initiative, which initially aims to install 600 parcel lockers. These lockers are already operational in Kyiv and the surrounding region (122 locations), as well as in Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, and Kropyvnytskyi. Installation is set to begin this week in Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk.
Beyond the cities mentioned, the service is active in Kyiv and its region with 122 branches, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, and Kropyvnytskyi, according to Smilianskyi. This expansion reflects Ukrposhta's push to modernize and make postal services more accessible to the public.
Challenges and Hurdles
However, amid this growth, Ukrposhta faces serious setbacks. The National Bank of Ukraine has imposed a fine of 2,544,900 Ukrainian hryvnias on the company, which must be paid within 14 calendar days. Additionally, the central bank has deemed CEO Ihor Smilianskyi professionally unfit for his role. The regulator has ordered the company to remove him from his position and appoint a new director within two months.
Ihor Smilianskyi has characterized the National Bank's findings as an attempt to block the creation of a postal bank.
He has vowed to hold officials accountable, declared his intention to challenge the regulator's actions, and threatened legal proceedings. As a result, tensions surrounding Ukrposhta remain high even as it continues to expand its services.
The rollout of parcel lockers demonstrates Ukrposhta's effort to meet modern consumer demands and improve service access. Yet, the fine and leadership crisis jeopardize the company's future growth and stability.
