Older Banknotes to Be Withdrawn from Circulation

The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) has announced it will begin withdrawing older 50 and 200 hryvnia banknotes, specifically those issued between 2003 and 2007, from active circulation. These notes will be replaced with the modern versions of the same denominations, which were first issued in 2014 and later. The replacement will occur gradually through normal banking transactions as the old notes are deposited.

Once these older banknotes are received by commercial banks, they will not be reissued to the public. Instead, they will be withdrawn and sent to the National Bank for counting and eventual destruction. This initiative aims to improve the overall quality and reliability of cash in circulation and to streamline cash operations. Upon completion of the process, only the modern-generation banknotes will remain in use.

Ongoing Changes to Ukraine's Cash System

This move follows a previous change where, starting March 2, 2023, the paper 1, 2, 5, and 10 hryvnia notes from the 2003-2007 series ceased to be legal tender and were replaced by coins. As the NBU stated,

'Once they reach the banks, the old-design 50 and 200 hryvnia banknotes will no longer be returned to circulation. They will be withdrawn and transferred to the National Bank for subsequent counting and disposal.'
According to the central bank, this action will
'enhance the quality and reliability of the national cash currency in circulation.'

Replacing the older notes with modern ones is part of the National Bank of Ukraine's broader strategy to modernize the monetary system and bolster public confidence in the national currency. Such measures are common globally as central banks work to maintain secure and efficient cash supplies. Alongside withdrawing old notes, the NBU continues to implement new technologies to better monitor the quality of money in circulation.

This recent decision to withdraw older 50 and 200 hryvnia banknotes is part of a larger effort by the National Bank of Ukraine to enhance the quality of the cash system. In line with these changes, the NBU has also been phasing out low-value paper notes in favor of coins.
