The Journey of Ivan Chadayev

Ivan Chadayev, a member of Ukraine's National Guard, began his military career as a conscript and rose through the ranks to become an officer commanding a specialized battalion. His unit was actively engaged in defending key cities in the Zaporizhzhia region, including Melitopol, Tokmak, Kamianske, and Stepnohirsk. During combat, Ivan sustained injuries from artillery shelling and later suffered a concussion caused by a rocket barrage, which resulted in impaired vision and hearing. Despite these hardships, he persevered, continued his service, and completed advanced operational training at the National Guard Academy of Ukraine.

Achievements in Sports

Beyond his military service, Ivan has been an active competitor in veteran sports events, excelling in disciplines such as:

  • bench press
  • rowing
  • cycling
  • strongman competitions

In 2026, Ivan earned international recognition at the Strong Spirit’s Games held in Semmering, Austria—an event that brought together veterans from Ukraine, the USA, Ireland, Estonia, and Bahrain. He claimed the championship title in bench press and also secured two silver medals and one bronze across rowing, air bike, and the amateur European Strongman Championship.

Ivan Chadayev reflected on his injuries: 'I don’t really keep count of each wound. This one was relatively mild. I’m grateful it happened the way it did because it prevented any casualties among my unit. That was the most important thing.'

He also highlighted the resilience of veterans, stating, 'Veterans are incredibly strong people—not just physically, but mentally and in character.' His determination and active involvement in sports continue to inspire many.

Ivan Chadayev’s story is a powerful testament to the resilience and courage of Ukrainian veterans who, despite severe injuries and challenges, remain committed to serving their country and motivating others. His participation in competitive sports not only showcases his personal strength but also reflects the supportive community among veterans that fosters recovery and adaptation to civilian life. His experience underscores how sport plays a crucial role in rehabilitation, helping veterans regain both their physical health and mental wellbeing after their military service.
