Premiere of 'Quiz'
The Lesya Ukrainka National Academic Drama Theatre is set to premiere a new interactive courtroom drama titled 'Quiz' tomorrow. The play is based on a real-life cheating scandal that rocked the British TV show 'Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?' roughly 25 years ago. This production will allow the audience to participate in the on-stage game show, immersing them directly in the unfolding drama. The story remains a fascinating case study of ambition and deception in popular culture.
The scandal dramatized in 'Quiz' centers on Charles Ingram, a British Army major who, in 2001, won £1 million on the show. His victory was later voided after he was found guilty of fraud. Ingram had conspired with his wife and another contestant, who used coded coughs to signal the correct answers. In 2003, Ingram, his wife, and their accomplice were all convicted. The case became a national sensation in the UK and the most notorious scandal in the show's history, later inspiring a television series also called 'Quiz'.
Director and Cast
The director of 'Quiz' is Matvii Nikitin, who gained recognition for his previous hit play 'A Brilliant Idea', which ranked among the top ten highest-grossing theatrical productions in the capital last year. The new production features nearly twenty actors from the Lesya Ukrainka Theatre, with the stage design crafted by Olha Goldys.
The theatre's new season opens tomorrow with 'Quiz', which is poised to be a standout event in the capital's cultural calendar. The premiere is drawing attention not only for its interactive format but also for its timely exploration of fraud in the entertainment industry. By adapting this internationally resonant story, the production has the potential to spark lively discussions among audiences about ethics in media and the moral dilemmas of competition.
