National Police Raid Offices in Three Regions Over Landfill Fund Embezzlement

Правоохоронці провели обшуки в офісах у трьох областях у справі про зловживання коштами на сміттєзвалищах.

National Police Investigation Underway

The National Police of Ukraine is conducting a criminal investigation into the embezzlement of state funds allocated for the collection, transportation, and disposal of household solid waste in several regions. Raids are currently taking place across the Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Lviv oblasts.

Law enforcement officers are executing search warrants at locations including solid waste landfill sites, corporate offices, and the registered addresses of persons of interest. One such raid is occurring at a communal enterprise within the premises of the Dnipro City Council. These investigative actions commenced on January 20.

Dnipro Mayor's Reaction

In response to these events, Dnipro Mayor Borys Filatov expressed his outrage, stating:

"Esteemed 'law enforcement officers,' I have just one question. Couldn't you have come to conduct a raid tomorrow morning, instead of today?" - Borys Filatov

The police actions have provoked a significant public reaction among local residents and government officials. This case highlights the ongoing challenges of corruption in Ukraine's public utilities sector, which has been a focus of reform efforts since 2014.

The National Police's investigation into the misappropriation of public funds for waste management underscores the critical need for oversight of local budget expenditures. This situation may lead to a broader review of waste management practices across Ukraine and potential reforms in the sector, which could significantly impact the country's environmental policy.
