Electric Water Heaters vs. Gas Geysers: Which Is More Cost-Effective?

Електричні бойлери та газові колонки: що надає більше вигоди для вашого бюджету?

Comparing Electric Water Heaters and Gas Geysers

Ukraine's national oil and gas company, Naftogaz, has released a study comparing electric water heaters and gas-powered geysers for domestic hot water supply. The analysis covers their design, operating principles, usage statistics, advantages, disadvantages, and key selection criteria.

According to a 2019 selective survey of households by the State Statistics Service, 47% of respondents had access to hot water. Among them, 33% relied on water heaters. On average, households using electric water heaters pay less for their utility bills than those using gas geysers. This analysis is particularly relevant as households globally seek to manage rising energy costs.

How They Work and Maintenance Advice

An electric water heater operates by warming water with an internal heating element. There is also an indirect heating model, which lacks its own element and instead uses heat from an external source. The tank capacity for an indirect heater typically starts at around 100 liters, which can be sufficient for an average household's needs.

A gas geyser, conversely, can run on either natural or liquefied petroleum gas. It consumes an average of about 2.5 cubic meters of gas per hour. Owners of gas geysers are advised to have them inspected annually for safety and efficiency. For electric water heaters, the magnesium anode should be replaced every 2-3 years as per maintenance guidelines.

Naftogaz notes that both an electric water heater and a gas geyser are viable alternatives to a centralized hot water supply. They allow households to be independent of supply schedules and tariffs, to control their own consumption, and to always have hot water available at home.

Before making a purchase, experts recommend considering several important factors:

  • Budget
  • Installation requirements
  • Ease of use
  • Energy load and resource consumption
  • The physical dimensions of the chosen unit

These factors can significantly influence the choice between an electric water heater and a gas geyser, as each has its own distinct set of pros and cons.

The comparison underscores the importance of an informed consumer choice, especially in an era of increasing energy prices and the need to reduce household utility expenses. Given inflation and shifts in energy policy, consumers should carefully select water heating appliances that align with their specific needs and financial capabilities. This study serves as a useful tool for households aiming to achieve savings and greater energy efficiency.
