Ukraine's state-owned energy company, Naftogaz, is advising natural gas consumers to install gas detectors to monitor air quality and prevent potential hazards. This recommendation is particularly important for households using gas stoves, as these devices can alert residents to the presence of dangerous gases. Such safety measures are increasingly common in homes worldwide where natural gas is used.
The Naftogaz portal has published information on the need for these air quality monitoring devices. A gas detector is capable of sensing several types of hazardous substances. Specifically, it can detect methane, which is the primary cause of domestic gas explosions. The device can also identify propane and butan, which are used in cylinders for gas stoves, as well as carbon monoxide (CO). Carbon monoxide is produced by the incomplete combustion of fuel and is a deadly, odorless gas.
Cost and Benefits of Installation
The price for a basic gas detector starts at 1,200 Ukrainian hryvnias, while more advanced models cost around 2,200 hryvnias. Installing these devices can significantly improve safety in homes that use gas appliances and help prevent potentially dangerous situations. This upfront investment is minor compared to the protection it offers against fire, explosion, or poisoning.
