McDonald’s returns to Lukyanivka district

In Kyiv’s Lukyanivka neighborhood, the McDonald’s restaurant damaged during a Russian attack on the night of May 24 has resumed operations. This outlet holds the distinction of being the oldest in Ukraine, having first opened its doors on May 24, 1997. Its reopening marks a significant milestone for local residents eager to restore a sense of normalcy amid wartime conditions.

The May 24 assault ranks among the largest and costliest in recent months. The shelling affected six Ukrainian regions, and in Kyiv alone, damage was recorded at 49 sites, including civilian and administrative infrastructure. The capital saw 87 people injured—among them three minors—while two others lost their lives.

A symbol of resilience and hope

As early as July 2025, McDonald’s had confirmed it would not relocate the restaurant, underscoring the importance of its presence in Lukyanivka.

“The Mac on Lukyanivka is back in business. 29 years by your side. We keep going,” the company stated. They also noted that “customers want to see us in Lukyanivka.”

The restaurant’s revival stands as a testament to resilience and hope for Kyiv residents striving to rebuild their daily routines after heavy bombardments.

Reopening the Lukyanivka McDonald’s reflects the business’s commitment to adapting to new realities and bolstering the local economy despite the challenges posed by the war. For many Kyivans, this location has become more than a place to eat—it represents a return to normal life and a beacon of optimism for the future.

The recent reopening of McDonald’s in Lukyanivka highlights the resilience of Kyiv’s community in the face of adversity. Interestingly, just as this iconic outlet has resumed operations, another McDonald’s in the capital faced significant damage during a recent attack.
