Challenges of Artist Pensions in Ukraine

Svitlana Bilonozhko, a People's Artist of Ukraine, has voiced concerns over her pension, which currently stands at 11,600 hryvnias. Previously, her pension was 8,000 hryvnias before rising to 10,000 hryvnias. Despite these incremental increases, Bilonozhko argues that artists deserve far greater financial support in retirement. She stated that an ideal pension for performers should be at least 1,000 dollars per month.

“This is ridiculous, really. The pension should be much higher,” — Svitlana Bilonozhko

During their careers, Svitlana and her late husband Vitaliy Bilonozhko drew crowds of up to 40,000 people at stadium concerts. Reflecting on their early earnings, the artist recalled: “Vitalik earned 12.50 rubles per concert, and I made 9.50. Back then, everyone envied us, saying, 'Wow, that's 20 rubles for the two of you!'” These memories highlight how substantial their fees were compared to today's pension amounts.

Additional Income and Social Responsibility

Beyond her pension, Svitlana Bilonozhko generates extra income by renting out real estate. She noted, “We somehow manage our lives to cover all the essentials.” The artist also donates a portion of proceeds from charity concerts to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This reflects her social responsibility and active engagement in the country's affairs.

Recently, Bilonozhko celebrated her granddaughter's birthday and shared archival photos featuring her late husband Vitaliy. Her interview, published by the outlet 'Glavcom,' underscores the ongoing relevance of her remarks on pensions and financial support for artists.

The issue of artist pensions in Ukraine remains pressing, as many who contributed significantly to the nation's cultural life face financial hardships in retirement. Bilonozhko's statements mirror a broader trend among cultural figures advocating for improved social security in the country. Her proactive stance and charitable work also highlight the importance of support during difficult times, especially amid war and social change.

As the conversation around financial stability for artists in Ukraine continues, it's worth exploring how other musicians manage their earnings and expenses. For instance, singer ONUKA recently shared insights into her income sources and living costs, shedding light on the broader economic challenges faced by performers today.
