Using Traditional Remedies to Treat Coughs

Coughing can be triggered by common colds, seasonal allergies, or even acid reflux. Many people turn to home-based, traditional treatments to ease their symptoms. This article explores popular natural remedies, examines the research supporting their use, and highlights warning signs that indicate the need for professional medical attention or emergency services.

One of the most trusted natural remedies for soothing throat irritation is honey. A 2021 scientific review found that honey outperforms standard care for respiratory infections and significantly reduces antibiotic use. Another 2021 study showed honey’s effectiveness to be comparable to the over-the-counter cough suppressant dextromethorphan. Alongside honey, staying well-hydrated with warm liquids like low-fat broth, caffeine-free black tea, or hot water mixed with ginger and honey is recommended. Inhaling warm steam may also aid in loosening mucus, though some research suggests it doesn’t consistently speed recovery from colds.

Additional Natural Treatments

Other common home remedies for cough relief include:

  • Gargling with warm salt water, made by dissolving half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water,
  • Using marshmallow root tea, which contains natural mucilage that protects the throat from irritation,
  • Thyme, traditionally used for bronchitis and persistent coughs; scientific analyses support the effectiveness of thyme-based products,
  • A combination of thyme and ivy extracts, which may accelerate recovery with minimal side effects,
  • Bromelain, an enzyme found in fresh pineapple cores, known to reduce inflammation and help clear mucus from the bronchial tubes, although its concentration in commercial pineapple juice is low.

It’s important to note that coughing can also be caused by acid reflux irritating the vocal cords. In such cases, avoiding foods like fried dishes, coffee, chocolate, alcohol, mint, spicy seasonings, and fresh tomatoes is advised. For chronic bronchitis, acetylcysteine (ACC) is often used to thin mucus; however, this medication may cause allergic reactions, swelling, or breathing difficulties in some individuals.

While home remedies can alleviate mild coughs, they are not substitutes for treatment of serious conditions like pneumonia or bacterial infections. Urgent medical evaluation is necessary if you experience a fever above 39°C (102.2°F) lasting more than three days, yellow or green phlegm with a strong odor, coughing up blood, or difficulty breathing. Prompt consultation with a healthcare provider or calling emergency services can be lifesaving in these situations.

This overview covers a range of traditional cough treatments that can be helpful for minor illnesses such as colds. However, they should never replace professional medical care when dealing with severe infections like pneumonia or bacterial illnesses. Recognizing critical symptoms early can ensure timely access to appropriate treatment.
