Study on Eyelash Extension Effects
A new study titled 'Regular Use of Eyelash Extensions is Associated with Demodex folliculorum Infestation, Eye Irritation, and Sebaceous Gland Blockage' was presented by Dr. Tetyana Zhmud from the National Pirogov Medical University in Vinnytsia at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) Congress. The investigation involved 345 women aged 16 to 28, nearly a quarter of whom regularly underwent eyelash extension procedures.
Key Findings
More than half of the women receiving extensions had them applied every three to four weeks. Almost 50% reported symptoms such as discomfort, redness, tearing, or itching following the procedure. Infrared meibography revealed that 85% of those who had extensions at least ten times suffered from meibomian gland dysfunction. Moreover, Demodex folliculorum mites were detected in nearly all frequent users.
Some participants exhibited signs of demodectic blepharitis, including itching, swelling, redness, and skin flaking around the eyes. It's important to note that the presence of Demodex mites alone does not necessarily indicate disease, as these mites can be part of the normal ocular microbiota. However, when symptoms like inflammation and gland dysfunction arise, identifying and treating the cause is crucial, highlighted Professor Sorcha Ní Dhubhghaill.
Researchers advise the following precautions:
- Maintain eyelid hygiene by applying a hypoallergenic, preservative-free gel twice daily;
- Use specialized brushes designed for eyelid cleaning;
- Consult healthcare professionals promptly if symptoms develop for appropriate medical treatment.
