NASA's roadmap for lunar missions up to 2029
These efforts are part of a larger push to sustain a human presence beyond low Earth orbit. By 2029, NASA wants to perform more than 20 robotic landings on the Moon, aiming to establish a permanent outpost near the lunar South Pole. This ambitious campaign, set to begin in the next few years, brings on board private partners including Blue Origin, Firefly Aerospace, Intuitive Machines, and Voyager Technologies. The missions are designed to test new technologies, deliver equipment, and build the foundations of a lunar supply chain that will support future astronaut flights.
ScienceDaily reports that the first phase of NASA's plan runs through 2029 and involves over 20 robotic missions. The landers used for these flights will carry scientific payloads, gear, and other supplies down to the surface. In addition, every vehicle will evaluate systems for communication, precision touchdown, power generation, surface travel, and the ability to endure severe temperature swings.
Private industry takes center stage
Among the participating companies, Blue Origin is readying a lander called Blue Moon MK1, also known as Endurance. This vehicle is currently undergoing testing in environments that mimic the vacuum of space and intense thermal conditions. Endurance's debut mission is intended to demonstrate precise landing, collect data on the lunar environment, and check out autonomous operations. The lander has already completed major assembly milestones and verified communications with NASA's ground systems.
- Firefly Aerospace is pushing ahead with Blue Ghost Mission 2, which could become the first American landing on the far side of the Moon.
- Intuitive Machines is preparing its third lunar mission, IM-3, using a lander named Trinity. It will carry five NASA payloads, six commercial ones, and one civilian load to the lunar surface.
- Voyager Technologies is testing the Griffin-1 lander, with a launch expected toward the end of 2026.
NASA is also partnering with Northrop Grumman to develop power systems and hardware capable of operating through the lunar night, a period lasting roughly two Earth weeks and marked by extreme temperature shifts.
The agency plans to build up infrastructure at the Moon's South Pole for both robotic explorers and, eventually, human crews, opening fresh avenues for studying Earth's natural satellite.
This NASA initiative represents a major milestone in space exploration, offering new pathways for investigating the Moon.
