One More Year: NASA Keeps Voyager 2’s Science Running

Voyager 2’s Power System Gets a Life-Extending Reset

At 19:00 on August 7, NASA announced that it had successfully rebalanced the power supply on Voyager 2, giving the probe’s three remaining science instruments enough energy to keep operating for at least another year. Launched in 1977, the spacecraft is currently about 21.4 billion kilometers from Earth, moving at roughly 54,700 kilometers per hour. It was originally expected to last just five years, yet it has now been active for more than 46 years.

At the time of the power rebalancing, only three science tools were still functioning: the cosmic ray subsystem, the magnetometer, and the plasma wave subsystem. The probe started out with ten instruments, but as its radioisotope thermoelectric generators have weakened over time, NASA had planned to switch off two instruments per year starting in 2024.

Mission Extended Once Again

In 2023, engineers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory activated a hidden reserve in the spacecraft’s voltage-spike protection system, which proved crucial to the mission’s survival. Their approach, unofficially called the “Big Bang,” freed up enough power to keep the instruments going for one more year.

A similar extension is now planned for Voyager 1, which is about 25.6 billion kilometers away from Earth. Together, the two probes have explored Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Uranus, along with 48 moons and the magnetic fields and rings of those planets. NASA is continuing its efforts to extend Voyager 1’s operation so that it can keep delivering new information about interstellar space.

Voyager 2’s successful power adjustment highlights the ingenuity of NASA’s engineers, who are still finding ways to do meaningful science with aging hardware and tight resources. This extra time in the mission opens up fresh opportunities to gather valuable interstellar data, helping scientists better understand the Milky Way and how it has changed over time. The long-running Voyager program also shows the lasting value of ambitious, decades-long space missions for the global research community.
