In a U.S. Experiment, Entangled Photons Travel 62 Kilometers Through City Fiber Optic Lines

Researchers from the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), working with the University of Maryland, have successfully sent entangled photons through a standard optical fiber cable running 62 kilometers across an urban environment. The transmission line had to cope with wind, temperature swings, traffic vibrations, and bird activity, making the test a major step forward for quantum communication.

Experiment Details

Carried out on August 18 at 19:32, the trial used a special laser signal to automatically correct distortions appearing along the cable. System calibration accounted for 7.2 percent of the experiment time, leaving 92.8 percent available for steady quantum information transfer. The transmission rate ranged from 200 to 1500 entangled photons per second.

While 62 kilometers is not an absolute record for quantum transmission, these results carry real weight for the evolution of quantum communications. The full findings were published in the Journal of Optical Communications and Networking under DOI 10.1364/JOCN.592521. This success underscores recent gains in quantum technology and points toward communication systems built on quantum principles.
