From Tragedy to Triumph: Nazar from Ivano-Frankivsk Marks His First Birthday After His Mother’s Injury in Kyiv Attack

Nazar celebrates his first birthday

The Journey of Little Nazar

In Ivano-Frankivsk, a boy named Nazar recently celebrated his first birthday, a milestone shadowed by the tragic loss of his mother during a Russian assault on Kyiv. Nazar’s mother, Tetiana, succumbed to injuries more than two weeks after giving birth, leaving his aunt Oksana and her husband to care for him.

Nazar was born prematurely in Kyiv at just seven months. On the night of September 7, 2025, a Russian drone strike targeted the home of Vadym and Tetiana in the Sviatoshynskyi district. Tetiana suffered burns over 90% of her body, severe respiratory burns, toxic smoke inhalation, and critical burn shock. Despite medical efforts, she passed away weeks later. Nazar faced a difficult start, relying on mechanical ventilation and minimal nutritional support. After his discharge, he was relocated to Ivano-Frankivsk, where his aunt and her husband now provide his care.

Family Challenges and Nazar’s Ongoing Fight

In Ivano-Frankivsk, Nazar shares his life with a three-year-old cousin. He has undergone three brain surgeries and requires monthly trips back to Kyiv for medical check-ups. Nazar’s father is also undergoing treatment and is unable to be with his son full-time due to his own health issues.

"Nazar is an incredibly special boy who deserves a bright and happy future. He radiates an amazing light that touches everyone he meets. Despite his small size, he’s remarkably strong. What he has overcome in just one year is truly astonishing. Thank you for being with us, Nazar,"

Oksana, Nazar’s Aunt

Oksana shared that hospital visits often prompt the heartbreaking question, "Where is his mother?" She explains, "When I tell them she passed away, it brings back the pain of that tragedy. Tetiana gave her life to save Nazar. He will always know he had a strong, loving mother—though fate denied them time together."

Despite immense hardships, Nazar continues to fight for his life and brings joy to those around him.

Nazar’s story highlights the profound human cost of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The loss of his mother in the attack and the extensive medical struggles he endures illustrate the deep wounds inflicted on families by war. The devoted care provided by his aunt underscores the resilience and love that help sustain those caught in the most challenging circumstances.
